 Caucasus Tour

 

 

Day ½ ARRIVAL – YEREVAN – EJMIADZIN - ZVARTNOTS

Arrival to Yerevan, Armenia. Meeting and transfer to hotel. Accommodation at the hotel. Rest.11:00 Excursion  to museum Erebuni.  Visit to Matenadaran museum.

Our Tour continues with the centre of Armenian-Apostolic Church in Echmiadzin. A visit to Main Cathedral and Hripsime church. Ejmiatzin means the coming of the only begotten because it was built were people said Jesus Himself descended from heaven to show where he wanted a church to be built. By your way visit ruins of  “Zvartnots “ temple.

Dinner at the National restaurant “Our Village ”  where you can taste Armenian National food and listen Folk music. Overnight at the hotel in Yerevan. (B/-/D)

DAY 3: YEREVAN – GENOSIDE MUSEUM – GARNI - GEGHARD

A visit to Genocide Memorial to the victims of 1915. Then our tour continues with driving to the Pagan Temple of Garni, which is the only non-Christian temple currently standing in Armenia and cave monastery in Geghard. The structures of the fortress of Garni are in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. The fortress is situated in a picturesque mountain locality and commands a broad panorama of orchards, fields and mountain slopes covered with motley carpets of varicoloured grasses.

Lunch at a local house in Garni where you will have opportunity to watch Armenian national bread "lavash" baking and barbeque making process in the underground stove called "tonir".  Northeast of Garni, higher up the gorge of the River Azat, there is a magnificent monument of medieval Armenian architecture - Geghard monastery (inscribed in UNESCO World Heritage list). Geghard is another incredible ancient Armenian monastery, partly carved out of a mountain. Return to Yerevan. (B/L/-)

 

Day 4 Yerevan – Saghmosavank – Hovhannavank – Amberd – Breandy factory

Visit to Saghmossavank and Hovhanavank  medieval monastery, situated in the breathtaking site, at the deep canyon of Ashtarak. Tour to Fortress of Amberd, (9th century), 6 km from the village of Byurakan, stands halfway up Mt. Aragats, at the height of 2300m. Picnic near the Amberd fortress. Return to Yerevan. Visit to Breandy factory. (B/L/-)

  

Day 5  Yerevan – Khor Virap – Noravank –  Areni – Selim – Sevan

Breakfast. Transfer to Khor Virap Monastery, from here one can enjoy the majestic view of Mount Ararat (where Noah’s ark landed according to the Bible), not too far from the River Arax. Khor Virap is the closest point to Mount Ararat from the territory of Armenia, the most convenient place for observing and taking pictures of the biblical mountain.  Noravank set in a canyon is rich with rare flora. Lunch. Then we can continue our tour to Areni wine factory. We will have an opportunity to taste Armenia’s finest wine in a village nearby. Then our tour is continued by Selim pass to Sevan lake.  A visit to Sevanavank.  Overnight in Sevan. (B/L/-)

Day 6 Sevan – Dilijan - Haghartsin

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive to Dilijan . Sightseeing by Dilijan town. Walking tour to   the Haghartsin Monastery. In the upper reaches of the River Aghstev, there is Haghartzin monastery ensemble of the Tavush district. It is situated in dense oak wood, in the gorge of a small but turbulent mountain river. There is a number of very interesting khachkars (cross stones) in the Monastery. Then our tour continues with Gosha Vank where you can hike 2 hours to Parz lake.  Accommodation and dinner at the hotel in Dilijan. (B/-/D)

 

Day 7 Haghpat - Sanahin– Sadakhlo border - Tbilisi, Georgia

Breakfast. Trip to Sanahin Monastery (10-13cc.) (A UNESCO World Heritage site), which is comprised to several churches and chapels. Visit Haghpat Monastery (10-13cc). The construction of this monastery is associated with the glory of the Bagratuni Royal Family. The oldest structure of the monastery, the holy Cross Church was built in 977 - 911. Have lunch and drive to Sadakhlo border.

15:00 meet at the border, coach and guide change and drive to Tbilisi. Evening excursion in Old city. dine at Georgian Traditional restaurant in Tbilisi and overnight.  (B/-/D)

 

Day 8: Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Tbilisi

In the morning we take you to the places that will show you the old city. You will be able to take a glance to the history of the city from early centuries to nowadays by walking in narrow streets of the city and exploring the religious and secular architecture. Here you will find different religious buildings – churches, synagogues, mosques, as well as famous 19th century houses with wooden multi-colored balconies. We will visit the sulfur bath which made an unforgettable impression on Pushkin, Lermontov, Dumas. Later we will visit the stunning treasury of the Georgian National Art Museum or History Museum (depending which one is open). After lunch break we will continue with Mtsketa - ancient capital and religious center of Georgia and see its historical places: Jvari church (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century) where the Robe of Christ is buried. Both Jvari and Svetitskhoveli are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Transfer back to Tbilisi. Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi.(B/-/D)

Day 8: Tbilisi – Kazbegi – Gudauri

Drive up the famous Georgian Military Highway (leading to the Georgian-Russian border). On the way a visit to Ananuri architectural complex (17th century), the two churches and the fortress overlook the Zhinvali water reservoir. A stunning drive along the Tergi River brings us to Kazbegi – the main town in the region. From Kazbegi a leisurely 1.5 hour walk up through beautiful valleys and woodland leads to Gergeti Trinity Church located at 2170m. Weather permitting you may catch a glimpse of one of the highest glaciers in the Caucasus – Mt Kazbegi (5047m). We will walk back to the town and drive back to Gudauri. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Gudauri. (B/-/D)

 

Day 9: Gudauri  – Gori – Tbilisi

Visit town of Gori – the heart of Kartli region with Stalin’s museum and Uplistsikhe Cave Town (1st millennium BC) - the place where the Great Silk Road used to pass. This is an old and interesting complex with dwelling quarters, wine-cellars, bakeries, a three-nave basilica church hewn out in rock and even an antic theatre. Later we drive back to Tbilisi. Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at a hotel in Tbilisi. (B/-/D)

 

Day 10: Departure
Transfer to the airport  and departure.
